Understanding 4K

Ultra High Definition(UHD), or 4K, is the very latest screen technology. 4K products have twice the pixel resolution of the Full HD products, 3840 x 2160 to be precise.

Currently there is not a great deal of content available in native 4K. We have to rely mostly on the products 'upscaling' existing content. Netflix and other streaming services have been talking up 4K and have already trialled their services. As broadband speeds increase, 4K streaming will become more widely available from providers.

There is no doubt that the number of 4K products to hit the market will grow rapidly with all the major consumer electronics brands constantly evolving their ranges.

It will be larger screen sizes which will benefit most from this 4K technology and it is noticable already that most brands are only launching larger screen sizes, 50" and above.

While the difference in picture quality over and above 1080p HD is noticable when viewing 4K content, it is not the huge leap that 1080p offers in comparison to standard definition. That said, as 4K becomes more widely available, it will replace these lesser resolution products and services. It is difficult to find a television now that is anything less than 1080p.

There are already a number of 4K products available from the likes of Panasonic, Samsung, LG and Sony.
